Eric's trip to Costa Rica- 1999
Eric and I both had the opportunity to take a college course in Tropical Forest Ecology at Binghamton University in Binghamton, NY. I went to Costa Rica with my class in 1998 and Eric went the following year. As part of the course requirements we had to write a paper detailing our experiences, and it was recommended we do so in journal format. Shortly after taking the course, Eric and I returned to Costa Rican as volunteers to work at a reforestation farm managed by one of the professors of the class, Dr. Richard Andrus. Dr. Andrus is one of a group of scientists supporting the project Tropical Forestry Initiative (TFI). TFI efforts include, studying the effects of prior deforestation and various strategies for reforestation, carrying out on-site research, conducting college courses and internships, and community outreach through various programs. Additionally, TFI offers a program to offset your personal 'carbon footprint' through donation and certification that encourages tropical forest conservation.
